Who's who

Briony

Stewart

Fiddle

Currently studying at the University of Edinburgh, Briony is our core fiddler.

Having had musical input from many world renowned fiddlers and composers, she has worked to develop a stylistic and modern approach to traditional styles from all around the world.

Inspired by trad music from a young age, she started playing the fiddle at the age of 9 and has since been lucky enough to play alongside many talented musicians at a variety of festivals, celebrations and international events.

You may also find Briony playing keys. Having started the piano with a classical focus, it became natural to transfer her love for Scottish trad music onto the keys. Today Briony is an accomplished accompanist to instrumentalists, singers and most importantly BROMA ceilidh band!

Matthew Duncan

Piano

Matthew Duncan, hailing from the outskirts of Glasgow, embodies the essence of Edinburgh's vibrant young trad scene. Under the guidance of Michael Biggins, he has honed his contemporary piano and accordion skills.

Driven by a deep love for traditional music, Matthew embarked on a UK tour with the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail in 2023. Tour highlights included supporting Breabach and Peat & Diesel at Sidmouth Folk Festival.

In 2024, Matthew represented Scotland at  Festival Interceltique de Lorient and then at the Olympic Games in Paris - where he provided tunes in the Athletes Village.

Currently, he collaborates regularly with BROMA and the Grange Project, whilst pursuing a mathematics degree at the University of Edinburgh.

Angus Montgomery

Drums

Angus began drumming at the age of 10, under the tutelage of Rossini Cavalcante, a pioneering figure in exporting Brazilian rhythms to the heart of Scotland. Angus has spent more than a decade playing within Scottish ceilidh bands travelling across the UK and Europe.

Growing up in Glass, Aberdeenshire, immersed in Scotland's musical heritage, Angus has cultivated a contemporary style, honed over a rich upbringing in traditional music. He has toured the Scottish festival circuit; played to a 10,000+ crowd at Inverness’ Hogmanay party; and was shortlisted for ‘Up & Coming Artist of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2018 as part of The Trad Project.

When asked about a ceilidh highlight, Angus replies… “without a doubt playing the warm-up ceilidh for 2000's rap legend Tinchy Stryder”.

Having recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh, where he coordinated their ceilidh band, Angus is also a geoscientist living in Edinburgh.

Rosie Winchester

Fiddle

Having grown up in the north-east of Scotland, being immersed in trad music from a young age, Rosie has always enjoyed the sociable interaction that music provides.

Having regularly competed at an advanced level in a variety of Scottish Music competitions, and often playing with local bands or at music sessions, Rosie has had the privilege to meet and play alongside many notable and talented musicians.

Rosie’s musical style has not only been influenced through full traditional and classical training but she has also forged her own musical identity through the places she has been and the people she has met along the way, both nationally and internationally.

As a recent graduate from the University of Edinburgh, Rosie is excited to continue her musical passion with BROMA alongside her professional career in the whisky industry.

Erika

Stewart

Piano

Growing up as a classical pianist, her talent for all things keys was widely recognised and led to her accompanying jazz bands, orchestras, singers and congregations. However, much like the rest of the band, she grew up immersed in the rich trad scene of north-east Scotland and at a young age began to play with, fiddle group sensation, the Fochabers Fiddlers before forming BROMA ceilidh band!

Having recently graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a degree in Music Education, she teaches full time as a secondary school music teacher whilst also offering private tuition. This means she gets to share her passion for not only traditional music, but also her curiosity of styles from around the globe which have helped influence her own style of playing and accompaniment
